Pitching chart, June 1-7, 2009: 300 for Unit?

Please pardon the delay in posting this week’s pitching chart. I did most of it on my laptop last night, but couldn’t finish because I was falling asleep. Today, I no longer have a hard drive on the laptop. So I started over.

*-RHP David Hernandez is the latest member of the Orioles’ new-look rotation, which so far looks much better than its old-look rotation. The 2008 Double-A Eastern League all-star won his first major league start.

**-A battle between two up-and-coming lefties will feature Chicago’s Clayton Richard and the Athletics’ Josh Outman, both 2-0 and pitching well.

3*-The Royals sent RHP Luke Hochevar to Triple-A Omaha to get some work while they didn’t need five starters in their rotation. He’s the most likely candidate to start Saturday, when KC again will need a fifth starter.

4*-In what could be the week’s best pitching matchup, Angels LHP Joe Saunders will oppose Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay Tuesday.

5*-The Twins will keep LHP Francisco Liriano, who hasn’t made it past four innings in any of his last three starts, in their rotation. That’s at least until LHP Glen Perkins could come off the disabled list in a few weeks.

6*-Yankees LHP Andy Pettitte left Friday’s start because of a stiff lower back, but said he expects to be able to pitch Wednesday.

7*-Because of Friday’s doubleheader, the Athletics will need a sixth starter for Tuesday’s game to keep everyone on at least an every-five-days schedule. The most likely candidate to start Tuesday would be RHP Vin Mazzaro. He would be pitching on that normal rest after starting one game of a doubleheader Thursday for Triple-A Sacramento, where he is 2-2 with a 2.38 ERA. Beyond Tuesday, Mazzaro could replace LHP Brett Anderson in Oakland’s rotation.

8*-LHP Garrett Olson started today for the Mariners, who have removed RHP Chris Jakubauskas from their rotation. Olson could start again Saturday, or Seattle could opt to return LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith, just off the disabled list, to its rotation.

9*-Rangers RHP Vicente Padilla said he felt fine after throwing 40 pitches in the bullpen, and is on schedule to come off the disabled list and start Tuesday’s game.

10*-To keep Halladay pitching every five days, the Blue Jays skipped Scott Richmond’s turn in the rotation over the weekend. He’ll return Saturday to make his first start in 11 days.

*-The Diamondbacks could opt to push back RHP Bill Buckner’s start Sunday to keep RHP Dan Haren on an every-five-days schedule.

**-Cubs RHP Carlos Zambrano will return from his six-game suspension to start Thursday’s game.

3*-Reds RHP Edinson Volquez, who had back spasms, is set to come off the disabled list to start Monday.

4*-Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez hasn’t announced Tuesday’s starter, but RHP Burke Badenhop seems most likely after winning his start last week.

5*-The Dodgers’ Opening Day starter, RHP Hiroki Kuroda, will come off the disabled list to start Monday. A strained oblique muscle had sideline Kuroda. He’ll take the rotation spot for now of LHP Eric Stults, who has gone on the DL because of a sprained thumb.

6*-LHP Antonio Bastardo is scheduled for his first major league start Tuesday. He has made rapid progress this season, going 3-2 with a 1.89 ERA, 5.10 strikeout/walk ratio and .189 opponents’ batting average between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. It could be a good thing Bastardo will be pitching on the road; imagine the names Phillies fans might call him if he struggled at home.

7*-It seems likely that RHP Joel Pineiro won’t be able to make his next scheduled start. His lower back injury, coupled with Kyle Lohse’s sore forearm, means that the Cardinals would need to come up with at least one additional starter this week. A likely candidate for Tuesday’s game is RHP Mitchell Boggs, scheduled to start Monday for Triple-A Memphis. The Redbirds’ Tuesday starter, RHP Clayton Mortenson, isn’t on St. Louis’ 40-man roster. Conflicting reports indicated that after missing Friday’s start Lohse could pitch Wednesday or Thursday. If he couldn’t go Wednesday, the Cards would need to add another starter (blowing up Memphis’ rotation by bringing up Mortenson as well?) because they wouldn’t want to risk an injury to RHP Chris Carpenter by having him pitch on three days’ rest.

8*-Despite an ankle injury, Padres RHP Jake Peavy is expected to make his scheduled start Tuesday. San Diego could move him ahead of RHP Kevin Correia to pitch Sunday on the usual four days’ rest.

9*-Giants LHP Randy Johnson will be going for his 300th career win Wednesday in Washington.

What's with the Yankees' red caps?

The Yankees are wearing red caps against the Rangers today.

Red caps? The Yankees?

Turns out it's the first time for New York, and apparently won't be the last.

This from the New York Times' Tyler Kepner:

"The Yankees will probably wear red caps for the first time in their history on May 25 at Texas. Major League Baseball has issued red caps for all teams, incorporating a flag design within the team logo, to be worn on Memorial Day, July 4 weekend and Sept. 11. The Yankees have not officially agreed to wear the cap — which was blue last season — but they seem likely to go along with it."

Hot and Not -- Think about Floyd, Kawakami

The players in these two sections were the statistical leaders during the last week. Batting averages are based on 20 at-bats, and ERA and WHIP on seven innings pitched. In most cases, we eliminate batters with an average lower than .280 and pitchers with ERAs above 4.00 from the Hot list. Keep in mind players’ career performance and current-season totals even more than current trends in deciding on whether to keep those players in your lineup.

2B Akinori Iwamura, Rays 11-25 .440 0-4 0
1B Adam LaRoche, Pirates 9-21 .429 2-5 1

Note that Houston and Minnesota, teams that didn’t have much overall success last week, provided half of this list. That shows that there’s more to real baseball than hitting. Kennedy must have thought he was back with the Angels in the 2002 playoffs. Teixeira is following his usual pattern of starting slowly and heating up after the first 4-6 weeks. LaRoche continues to be extremely streaky and unreliable from week to week.

Home runs – Teixeira 5; Cuddyer, Mauer, Rangers OF Nelson Cruz, Phillies OF Raul Ibanez, D-backs 3B Mark Reynolds and Marlins 2B Dan Uggla 4.

RBI – Mauer and Rays SS Jason Bartlett 13; Cuddyer 12; Teixeira, Rockies 1B Todd Helton and Angels OF Torii Hunter 10. Bartlett also now has the majors’ highest batting average. Don’t expect that to last.

Stolen bases – Reynolds 6; Bartlett, Cruz, Hunter, Mets OF Angel Pagan and Phillies OF Shane Victorino 3.

Runs – Mauer 12; Cuddyer 10; Bartlett and Yankees 2B Robinson Cano 8; Rays 3B/1B Willy Aybar, Brewers OF Ryan Braun, Angels OF Juan Rivera, Marlins OF Cody Ross and D-backs OF Justin Upton 7.

RHP Roy Halladay, Blue Jays 7.0 0.00 0-0 0.86 6:1
LHP Josh Outman, Athletics 13.2 0.66 1-0 0.95 6:6

It was Halladay’s second consecutive week on the Hot list. He pitched well even during a week when he didn’t win. Those who have criticized Peavy for wanting to stay in the National League where he can bat don’t understand real baseball. The contention that he’s “afraid” to pitch against the big, bad American Leaguers is preposterous. Floyd, who was on the Not list last week, and Kawakami could be coming out of season-long funks. They could be good pickups in leagues where their owners justifiably dropped them after five or six weeks.

Wins – Pirates LHP John Grabow, Rockies RHP Jason Marquis, Red Sox RHP Tim Wakefield and Padres RHP Chris R. Young 2.

Saves – Padres RHP Heath Bell and Angels LHP Brian Fuentes 3-for-3.

Strikeout/walk ratio (10 Ks, at least a 2.5:1 ratio) – Twins RHP Kevin Slowey 12:0; Giants RHP Tim Lincecum 10:1; Cardinals RHP Kyle Lohse 11:3; Rockies RHP Ubaldo Jimenez 14:4; Pirates LHP Zach Duke 11:4; Peavy, Nationals LHP Ross Detwiler and rangers RHP Brandon McCarthy 10:4.

RHP John Lackey, Angels 12.0 5.25 1-0 1.25 8:1

Martis was on the Hot list last week. His bubble might be bursting for now, but he seems likely to have some long-range value. I mean beyond 2009. This week’s Not list isn’t as bad as usual. Last week, all 10 had a higher ERA than Palmer’s this time – seven of them in double figures.

Losses – Lilly, Marlins RHP Leo Nunez and Giants LHP Barry Zito 2.

Blown saves – Marlins LHP Renyel Pinto 0-for-2; Phillies RHP Brad Lidge 1-for-3. I don’t especially mean to be alarmist, but a closer’s performance breakdown often signals a physical problem. Be careful with Lidge.

*-RHP Matt Albers is supposed to take the rotation spot vacated when the Orioles released RHP Adam Eaton. However, Albers pitched in relief Saturday after RHP Koji Uehara left the game. If Albers isn’t ready to start Tuesday, Baltimore could bring up LHP Chris Waters, who started Wednesday for Triple-A Norfolk.

**-Uehara left Saturday’s start because of a sore left hamstring. It’s not clear that he’d be able to start Thursday.

3*-The Indians might put RHP Anthony Reyes on the disabled list. He left Friday’s start because of an elbow injury. The most likely candidate to replace him Wednesday would be LHP Zach Jackson, who started Friday at Triple-A Columbus.

4*-RHP Armando Galarraga struggled again in Saturday’s start. He’ll still be in the rotation Thursday, but he or LHP Dontrelle Willis could be out once RHP Jeremy Bonderman comes off the disabled list. Check how he does Tuesday in his third injury-rehab start at Triple-A Toledo.

5*-The Royals have demoted RHP Luke Hochevar, whose turn would come up Friday, to Triple-A Omaha to give him a chance to make regular starts. Their short-term schedule provides off days that will allow Kansas City to go with a four-man rotation. Think of it this way: KC’s rotation will have two days of RHP Zack Greinke and none of Hochevar.

6*-RHP Anthony Swarzak pitched seven shutout innings Saturday in his major league debut against the Brewers. He replaced LHP Glen Perkins, who is on the disabled list. Swarzak is the real deal, another control pitcher from the Twins’ stockpile.

7*-RHP Edgar Gonzalez has joined the Athletics’ in-flux rotation.

8*-With LHP Scott Kazmir (left quadriceps injury) on the disabled list, the Rays have recalled LHP David Price, their former No. 1 draft pick, from Triple-A Durham.

9*-Blue Jays RHP Casey Janssen came off the disabled list to start Saturday, which would make his next start Friday after Thursday’s day off.

*-Diamondbacks RHP Bill Buckner pitched well in his first start after being recalled when Arizona returned RHP Bryan Augenstein to the minors. Buckner’s next start is scheduled for Wednesday.

**-Cubs RHP Randy Wells started Saturday because RHP Rich Harden (back) went on the disabled list. Wells’ next start is scheduled for Thursday. If you have Harden on your roster, don’t be upset with him for being injured. Be upset with yourself for putting the walking disabled list on your team.

3*-RHP Homer Bailey returned to the Reds to start Saturday because RHP Edinson Volquez went on the DL. Bailey’s next start would be Friday.

4*-Unless the Marlins bring up a pitcher, perhaps one they’ve recently demoted to the minors, they would move RHP Burke Badenhop from the bullpen to start Wednesday.

5*-Florida already has rookie LHP Sean West in its rotation after sending their Opening Day starter, RHP Ricky Nolasco, to Triple-A New Orleans. West made his first major league start Saturday and would be in line to start again Friday.

6*-The Phillies replaced RHP Chan Ho Park in their rotation with LHP J.A. Happ. He started Saturday, and would be on schedule to start Friday with four days’ rest. Philadelphia could move their ace, LHP Cole Hamels, who started today, ahead of Happ.

7*-LHP Ross Detwiler has made two starts for the Nationals. He has had some control problems, but allowed only one hit in eight innings during Saturday’s start and has a 2.45 ERA. He would pitch again Friday, and appears to have a long-term place in Washington’s rotation.

OF Juan Pierre, Dodgers 11-27 .407 0-5 4

Even though Zimmerman’s hitting streak ended, he made the Hot list for the second consecutive week.

Close to making this list were Pirates OF Brandon Moss (11-for-19, .579) and the majors’ season leader in batting average, Indians C/1B Victor Martinez (10-for-19, .526). A week earlier, Moss was on the Not list with a .100 average (2-for-20, including 0-for-14 going into last week). Those two players illustrate that sometimes Hot or Not hitters stay that way from one week to the next, but natural fluctuations in performance mean that sometimes a player who is Not will turn Hot, or vice versa.

Home runs – Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez 5; Ibanez, Brewers 1B Prince Fielder and Twins 1B Justin Morneau; Zimmerman, Blue Jays 2B Aaron Hill, Royals 1B Mike Jacobs and Twins C Joe Mauer 3. Is this signaling a return of first basemen as offensive forces?

Stolen bases – Wright, Angels 3B Chone Figgins, Orioles 2B Brian Roberts and Phillies OF Jayson Werth 5; Bartlett and Pierre 4.

Ray looked good in beating the White Sox Saturday. It’s too early in his career to become overly excited, but he’d be a good guy to pick up in a weak market for starting pitchers. You could always drop Ray if he begins to struggle. Hernandez has gone from Hot to Not and back to Hot over the past three weeks. Any question why Mariners management and fans, and King Felix’s fantasy owners, are frustrated? Maholm was on the Not list last week. Halladay and Greinke have been on this list almost every week. (Greinke was last week.) If either is available in your league, you have no excuse for not winning your championship.

Strikeout/walk ratio (10 Ks, at least a 2.5:1 ratio) – Astros LHP Wandy Rodriguez 11:0; Rockies LHP Jorge DeLaRosa 10:0; Halladay and Mets LHP Johan Santana 13:1; Padres RHP Jake Peavy 17:2; Twins RHP Kevin Slowey 10:2 and Braves RHP Javier Vazquez 10:2; Tigers RHP Justin Verlander 13:3; Rockies RHP Ubaldo Jimenez 11:3; Angels RHP Jered Weaver 11:4. Rodriguez seems to have turned a corner in his career; he’s someone worth considering for your team. With five wins, Slowey is on pace to justify the faith we had in him as our Jarrod Washburn Award winner, but he has been too easy to hit this season to help a fantasy team in ERA or WHIP.

WHIP – Pirates RHP Ross Ohlendorf 0.33; Ray and Wainwright 0.50; Rangers LHP Matt Harrison 0.56; Cardinals RHP Brad Thompson 0.60.

*- Red Sox RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (arm fatigue) pitched five scoreless innings Friday for Triple-A Pawtucket, allowing two runs and striking out nine, in what apparently was his last injury-rehab start. He’s expected to start Friday for Boston.

**- LHP Clayton Richard has replaced RHP Jose Contreras in the White Sox rotation. Chicago plans to give him several starts in hopes that he could settle in on a regular basis.

3*- Sox RHP Bartolo Colon left Saturday’s game after five innings because of what he called a “minor” stomach upset, though it seems hard to believe anything regarding his stomach would be minor. He also said he expects to make his next start on schedule Thursday.

4*- The Indians brought up LHP David Huff from Triple-A Columbus to make his major league debut as today’s starter, with LHP Jeremy Sowers demoted to Columbus. The 24-year-old Huff was 5-1 with a 4.35 ERA for the Clippers.

5*- The Royals are expected to keep Luke Hochevar in their rotation even though he struggled Tuesday in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

6*- Angels RHP John Lackey threw just two pitches Saturday on his return from the disabled list, but that wasn’t because of a recurrence of his strained forearm. Plate umpire Bob Davidson ejected Lackey because one pitch sailed behind Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler and the second hit him in the left rib cage. Lackey told me today, “I’m probably going to start tomorrow.”

7*- Athletics RHP Sean Gallagher will start Monday’s game, when a good performance could keep him in their rotation.

8*- Mariners LHP Erik Bedard missed Saturday’s start because of a sore right hamstring, but is expected to be ready to reclaim his place in the rotation to start Thursday.

*- The Diamondbacks promoted 22-year-old RHP Bryan Augenstein from Double-A Mobile, where he was 5-0 with an 0.78 ERA, 5.17 strikeout/walk ratio and .145 opponents’ batting average. Those numbers didn’t help him much when he lost his first major league start Wednesday to the Reds.

**- The Braves are promoting RHP Kris Medlen from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace LHP Jo-Jo Reyes in their rotation. Medlen was 5-0 with 1.19 ERA, 4.40 K/W ratio and .157 opponents’ average in the International League.

3*- The Cubs skipped LHP Sean Marshall’s most recent start Saturday so he could work out some problems in the bullpen. He’s scheduled to start Thursday, with RHP Randy Wells returning to a relief role.

4*- Reds RHP Micah Owings was scheduled to start Tuesday, but he pitched 5 2/3 relief innings and was the losing pitcher Saturday when Cincinnati fell in 16 innings at San Diego. It’s likely that RHP Aaron Harang would move ahead of Owings to pitch Wednesday, with both pitchers then starting on four days’ rest.

5*- Journeyman LHP Jon Koronka has joined the Marlins’ rotation with RHP Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list. Koronka lost Tuesday in his first major league start since 2007.

6*- The Dodgers have replaced RHP Jeff Weaver in their rotation with LHP Eric Milton, whose start Saturday was his first major league appearance in two years.

7*- The Mets recalled RHP Tim Redding from Triple-A Buffalo to start Monday’s game. He’ll be in the rotation spot once held by LHP Oliver Perez.

8*- Following Saturday’s doubleheader, the Phillies returned to their regular rotation with RHP Chan Ho Park starting today’s game. Rookie RHP Andrew Carpenter was with Philadelphia to start just Saturday’s second game.

9*- Cardinals RHP Kyle Lohse’s start Friday lasted just two innings before rain caused the game to be postponed. He’ll be able to return to the mound Monday, with the other starting pitchers lining up behind him in the rotation.

10*- RHP Chris Carpenter (oblique injury) threw more than 100 pitches in a simulated game Friday, and is expected to be able to resume his turn in the rotation Wednesday.

11*- Following Saturday’s doubleheader, the Nationals needed a fifth starter, so they recalled LHP Ross Detwiler from Double-A Harrisburg. He was 0-3 despite a 2.96 ERA for the Senators. Since his recall, LHP Scott Olsen went on the disabled list, so Detwiler is likely to stay in the rotation.

Hot and Not, up and down

The players in these two sections were the statistical leaders during the last week. Batting averages are based on 20 at-bats, and ERA and WHIP on seven innings pitched. In most cases, we eliminate batters with an average lower than .280 and pitchers with ERAs above 4.00 from the Hot list.

Schedule notes: Good week for hitters, Indians

You have a no-brainer choice this week if you’re deciding between hitters and relief pitchers from the Indians and Athletics. Cleveland, the only team in the American League scheduled for seven games this week, would have 40 per cent more games than Oakland, which would play five. Every other AL team is scheduled for six games.

In the National League, the Mets, Phillies, Giants and Nationals would play seven games, with the other 12 teams scheduled for six. San Francisco is the only major league team with seven scheduled home games (three against the Nationals, four against the Mets). That’s part of what should be overall a good week for hitters.

The Giants’ home park slightly favors hitters, but two stadiums scheduled to host six games this week are among the majors’ best hitters’ parks. At Texas, the Mariners and Angels are scheduled for three games each. The Padres and Astros are scheduled for three each at Wrigley Field.

The other parks in play all week slightly favor pitchers. Those parks are in Pittsburgh (Cardinals and Rockies three each) and Toronto (Yankees and White Sox three each).

Pitchers scheduled to start twice at home are RHPs Scott Feldman, Roy Halladay, Rich Harden and Matt Cain, and LHPs Zach Duke and Randy Johnson. Our highest recommendations are Halladay and Cain. We’ve already given you the inconsistent Duke as a live longshot, and we’ll give him another chance, along with Feldman. But remember, they’re live longshots, so they’re a gamble.

*-Even before Friday’s shaky start, White Sox RHP Jose Contreras was “on notice” from manager Ozzie Guillen, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. LHP Clayton Richard seemed to be Guillen’s first choice to replace Contreras Wednesday, with RHP D.J. Carrasco also a possibility.

**-Tigers LHP Dontrelle Willis is expected off the disabled list to start Wednesday. He has been making injury-rehab starts in the minors because of an anxiety disorder.

3*-Angels RHP Ervin Santana made a rehab start Saturday at Triple-A Salt Lake, which could put him in line to start for LA/Anaheim Friday. If he couldn’t pitch then, rookie RHP Anthony Ortega could stay in the rotation for the time being.

4*-Marinere RHP Carlos Silva was on shaky ground even before he went on the disabled list. Replacing him Monday will be LHP Jason Vargas.

*-RHP Hayden Penn is manager Fredi Gonzalez’s choice for Monday to come out of the Marlins’ bullpen to replace RHP Anibal Sanchez, who is expected to be on the disabled list until early July.

**-Florida LHP Andrew Miller is scheduled to come off the DL to start Saturday.

3*-With LHP Oliver Perez on the disabled list, LHP Jonathon Niese has moved into the Mets’ rotation.

4*-Looks like the Phillies picked a bad week to play a doubleheader. With no days off between Tuesday and Sunday, Philadelphia is likely to pick a sixth starter – even though one of their regular five, RHP Brett Myers is having difficulty both with his control and getting his fastball up to speed. The most likely in-house candidate to start Saturday’s second game is LHP J.A. Happ.

Injury update: What Willis is doing

Tigers LHP Dontrelle Willis, who has been on the disabled list because of an anxiety disorder, will return to the majors to start Wednesday’s game at Minnesota. He made four injury-rehab starts in the minor leagues. RHP Jeremy Bonderman is continuing to rehab in extended spring training. OF Carlos Guillen also is on the DL because of an inflamed right shoulder.

There’s intrigue in New York, where Mets manager Jerry Manuel indicated he had no knowledge that defective starter Oliver Perez had tendinitis in his right knee until the lefthander went on the disabled list. The Mets won’t be real winners until they clear up the in-fighting and palace coup attempts in their organization. Those are beginning to make the Yankees’ Bronx/Tampa split look like a crack in the sidewalk.

The Cardinals put OF Rick Ankeil on the 15-day disabled list because of a bruised shoulder suffered when he ran headfirst into an outfield wall Monday.

There has been a mini-epidemic of pitchers, mostly older ones with strained left hamstrings: RHP Carlos Zambrano (Cubs), Tom Gordon (Diamondbacks) and Doug Brocail (Astros)

More players who are newly on the DL:
Diamondbacks 1B Tony Clark (sprained right hand)
Mariners RHPs Brandon Morrow (biceps tendinitis) and Shawn Kelley (strained left oblique)
Royals SS (Tony Pena (fractured hamate bone, left hand)
Yankees LHP Damaso Marte (shoulder tendinitis)
Indians RHP Joe Smith (strained rotator cuff)
Athletics RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee)
Orioles RHP Dennis Sarfate (injured middle finger)
Dodgers LHP Hong-chih Kuo (sore elbow)
Marlins RHP Anibal Sanchez (strained shoulder)

A bunch more players have gone on injury-rehab assignments:
Blue Jays LHPs B.J. Ryan and Ricky Romero (high Class A Dunedin)
Padres RHP Cha Seung Baek (Triple-A Portland)
Pirates SS Jack Wilson (Triple-A Indianapolis)
Indians 2B/3B/SS Jamey Carroll (Triple-A Columbus)
Astros C Humberto Quintero (Triple-A Round Rock)

Newly off the DL:
Braves C Brian McCann
Red Sox OF Rocco Baldelli
Braves OF Garret Anderson
Phillies C Carlos Ruiz
Astros RHP Brian Moehler
Angels LHP Darren Oliver
Twins RHP Jesse Crain
Rangers RHP Kris Benson
Nationals LHP Joe Beimel
Athletics OF Ben Copeland, a Rule 5 draft pick who probably won’t play much

Chance to win longest-running fantasy contest

You now have a good chance to win the world's longest-running contest in fantasy baseball.

More than four years ago, we posed a question about Mariano Rivera. Now that he and the Yankees are admitting that his shoulder still isn’t right, one or more of the multiple-choice options in this contest could come to pass.

To win the prize, you’d merely have to go to our Message Board, send us back a message with the correct choice and have your name drawn as the winner. It doesn’t matter when you enter, the winner would be chosen from among those with the correct answer.

To enter, go to:

A bigger current problem for the Yankees is their catching, which of course also affects their pitching and their offense.

Jose Molina (strained left quadriceps) joined Jorge Posada (hamstring injury) on the 15-day disabled list, taking away New York’s two most experienced catchers. That leaves the Bombers with good-catch, no-hit Kevin Cash and the untested Francisco Cervelli, whose claim to fame so far was being run over and injured at home plate. That was the first indication last spring that the Rays no longer feared the Yanks.

Steroid story's sad, so fans ignore it

The funny thing -- no, really a sad thing -- is that as more players who are exposed as having used steroids, human growth hormore or other banned substances, the overall impact of that use on baseball diminishes.

The reaction to Manny Ramirez's 50-game suspension, the first by a name player, hasn't been so much "I can't believe Manny would do that!" or "He's lying with his lame excuse" as "He'll be back in July. That should be early enough for him to help the Dodgers win their division again."

He'll come back, and baseball will go on as usual. In the meantime, some lower-level players might be suspended for using banned substances. Those suspensions won't even be a blip on fans' radar screens.

Major League Baseball seems to be timing its revelations and suspensions for times that will have the least hurtful public-relations impact.

In this case, the day after Manny is suspended, Alex Rodriguez returns to the Yankees. Manny takes some of the heat off of A-Rod and his inevitable denials of the charges in Selena Roberts' book. Rodriguez's return provides a convenient diversion from any backwash or second-day follow-up on what might really have happened with Ramirez.

Yesterday, I spent time with a high school math class talking about baseball statistics. The students didn't know much about baseball, but as soon as I mentioned Barry Bonds' 73 home runs, a student said, "Steroids." That's not the kind of word association that's good for baseball, unless it wants to become another WWE.

I'm still waiting for the time when an athlete actually admits that he used banned substances and got caught. No more lame "personal health reasons" or "I didn't know what was in it" or "I did it once."

Ramirez's excuse that a doctor gave him something he thought was safe is as annoying as A-Rod's convenient confession to using steroids while he was in Texas but cutting himself off from them as soon as he became a Yankee. BS, I say! BS! From both players, from Andy Pettitte, from Paul Byrd, from Brian Roberts.

But I'm just one voice. In each city where a suspected player is coming back from a suspension or an injury, fans' only thought seemingly will be "Can he help us win the pannent?"

That's human nature, I suppose, but it's also sad. And a sad commentary on a country in trouble because the only thing that seems to matter is the bottom line.

Coming soon to a minor league park near you

You could probably make a living – at least during the summer months – as a travel agent booking trips between major league cities and their minor league affiliates for players on injury-rehab assignments.

There wouldn’t be as many cross-country trips as in the past, but part of your business could be arranging for limos to take players and their entourage from, say, Boston to Pawtucket, Baltimore to Bowie or Dallas to Frisco.

Anyway, just since the beginning this month, you would have had plenty of business. Here’s a list – might be comprehensive, might be one or two others that slipped through the cracks – of players going on rehab assignments just during that time.

Orioles – OF Ryan Freel to Double-A Bowie (limo ride)
Red Sox – RHP Diasuke Matsuzaka and OFs Rocco Baldelli and Mark Kotsay to Triple-A Pawtucket in one big limo. However, Baldelli might just stay at his home in Rhode Island.
Royals – RHP Doug Waechter to Triple-A Omaha (long limo ride); LHP John Bale to Double-A Northwest Arkansas
Angels – RHP John Lackey to Triple-A Salt Lake; RHP Ervin Santana to high Class A Rancho Cucamonga (limo)
Athletics – OF Ben Copeland to high Class A Stockton (fairly long limo ride)
Rays – C Shawn Riggans to Double-A Montgomery
Rangers – RHP Kris Benson to Double-A Frisco (limo, perhaps with a sidebar for Mrs. Benson’s, um, appendages)
Braves – C Brian McCann to Triple-A Gwinnett (limo)
Mets – RHP Tim Redding to Triple-A Buffalo
Padres – RHP Walter Silva to Triple-A Portland
Nationals – LHP Joe Beimel to high Class A Potomac (limo)

Some of those players already have returned to the major league roster. Another plane or limo ride booked by your travel agency. Cha-ching!

On Sunday, fans in Frisco got to see something major league fans haven’t seen: a game with Benson starting against Astros RHP Brandon Backe. They have been in the majors during six of the same seasons, but haven’t started against each other at that level.

Backe had the upper hand, pitching five scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the RoughRiders, who have been in a hitting slump. Benson allowed three runs in his five innings. The day’s best pitcher, however, was Corpus Christi Hooks LHP Polin Trinidad, who earned a save with four scoreless innings.

Originally, Texas was going to give Benson another rehab start at Frisco Friday, but now it appears that he’ll be activated for a role in the Rangers’ bullpen. Backe’s start Sunday was his second on a rehab assignment expected to last for five starts.

Hot, especially Pujols, and Not

The players in these two sections were the statistical leaders during the last week. Batting averages were based on 20 at-bats, and ERA and WHIP on seven innings pitched. In most cases, we eliminate batters with an average lower than .280 and pitchers with ERAs above 4.00 from the Hot list.

Hot

Pos. Name, Team H-AB Avg. HR-RBI SB

1B Todd Helton, Rockies 11-23 .478 1-7 0
2B Anderson Hernandez, Nationals 9-20 .450 0-4 1
1B/3B Miguel Cabrera, Tigers 9-21 .429 1-4 0
3B/SS Michael Young, Rangers 11-26 .423 1-3 0
1B Albert Pujols, Cardinals 8-20 .400 2-4 1
2B/SS Alberto Callaspo, Royals 10-26 .385 0-4 0
OF Carl Crawford, Rays 10-26 .385 0-2 11
3B/C/1B Pablo Sandoval, Giants 8-21 .381 1-3 2
SS Jason Bartlett, Rays 8-21 .381 1-3 1
3B Evan Longoria, Rays 11-29 .379 2-14 0

This is the second week in a row for Pujols on this list. As consistently excellent as he is, we expect him to be on this honor another time or a few times during the remainder of the season. Cabrera has been on this list before this season, but a week earlier he was on the bottom 10 list. Callaspo has been hitting the way he did in the minors and not at the lower level he'd hit in earlier major league chances. Don't expect him to hit .385 all season. But he could easily be at .285 or better, which would make him an above-average middle infielder.

Home runs – Marlins 3B/1B Jorge Cantu 4; Nationals OF/1B Adam Dunn and 3B Ryan Zimmerman, Cubs 2B/SS Mike Fontenot, Royals OF Jose Guillen, Phillies OF Raul Ibanez and 2B Chase Utley, Rays 1B Carlos Pena and Yankees OF/1B Nick Swisher 3.

RBI – Cantu and Longoria 14; Guillen 10; Ibanez 9; Helton, Pena, Dodgers 2B Orlando Hudson, Yankees OF Hideki Matsui and C Jorge Posada, Twins 1B Justin Morneau, Cubs SS Ryan Theroit, Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton, Brewers 2B Rickie Weeks, Blue Jays OF Vernon Wells and Red Sox 1B/3B Kevin Youkilis.

Stolen bases – Crawford 11; Astros OF Michael Bourn 4; Royals 2B/OF/SS Willie Bloomquist and Rockies OF Ryan Spilborghs 3.

Runs – Callaspo and Longoria 9; Bloomquist, swisher, Marlins C John Baker, Orioles OF Adam Jones and Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia 8.

LHP Doug Davis, Diamondbacks 7.0 0.00 1-0 0.71 7:3
LHP Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers 7.0 0.00 0-0 0.86 3:2

This is a very fluid list because pitchers' performances can fluctuate so much from one start to the next -- and during most weeks, they have only one start. Arroyo, Peavy and Kershaw all were on the bottom 10 list a week earlier. On the Not list below you'll see Padres RHP Chris R. Young, who was on this top 10 Hot list last week. Hernandez has made this list two weeks in a row, but didn't fare well tonight in losing to the Rangers. .

Wins – Dodgers RHP Jonathan Broxton, Diamondbacks RHP Dan Haren, Rangers LHP Matt Harrison, Marlins LHP Renyel Pinto, Blue Jays RHP Scott Richmond, Tigers RHP Justin Verlander and Cubs RHP Carlos Zambrano 2.

Saves – Rangers RHP Frank Francisco, Brewers RHP Trevor Hoffman, White Sox RHP Bobby Jenks and Giants RHP Brian Wilson 3-for-3.

Strikeout/walk ratio (10 Ks, at least a 2.5:1 ratio) – Gallardo 11:1; Haren 21:2; Garza 10:1; Reds RHP Johnny Cueto 14:2; Verlander 20:3; Braves LHP Jo-Jo Reyes 10:4.

WHIP – Volquez 0.25; Garza 0.26; Gallardo and Peavy 0.38; Marlins RHP Chris Volstad 0.43. Gallardo was on this list last week as well.

Walk/strikeout ratio (10 or more strikeouts) – Rays OF Pat Burrell 0:10; Cubs SS Ryan Theriot 2:11; Young 2:10.

The pitchers on the next list each made two starts, doubly damaging their fantasy teams.

Very little schedule advantage this week

This week will probably have the least schedule advantage for any team of any week this season.

Every team is scheduled for seven games, nearly parceled out in two two-game series Monday-Tuesday and Wednesday-Thursday and a three-game series Friday-Sunday.

Just two teams would be at home for all seven games and two on the road all week.

Just four major league pitchers -- Athletics LHPs Brett Anderson and Dallas Braden, and Dodgers LHP Eric Stults and RHP Jeff Weaver -- are scheduled to start twice at home. Of those pitchers, Braden is the closest to being established and in his prime. Anderson is a rookie, Stults has just parts of a couple of seasons in the majors and the veteran Weaver didn't pitch well enough in the minors to warrant a major league callup last year. I'll still give you a highest recommendation, Braden, and a live longshot, Anderson. They would pitch against the Angels and the Blue Jays. Those wouldn't be easy assignments, but Toronto should be coming back to earth before long.

If anything, pitchers would have a slight overall edge this week, because Oakland plays home games in one of the majots' best pitchers' parks, and Dodger Stadium isn't far behind.

*-Today’s rainout at Yankee Stadium pushed the Angels’ rotation back one day, so LHP Joe Saunders is scheduled to start Monday instead of today.

**-The Yankees also pushed their rotation back a day, with RHP Phil Hughes moving from today to Monday.

***-The Blue Jays called up LHP Brett Cecil to join their injury-riddled rotation, with LHP David Purcey being optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

****-Toronto also recalled RHP Robert Ray to their rotation, with LHP Brian Burres going to Las Vegas. Ray was brought up originally because it would have been his night to pitch for the 51s, but he did well enough for the Jays to earn another start.

*-RHP Carlos Zambrano’s start Friday is in question because he suffered a strained left hamstring while beating out a bunt today. If he couldn’t start, the Cubs would most likely recall a pitcher from Triple-A Iowa. RHPs Jose Ascanio and Mitch Adkins have made the last two starts for Iowa, whose last two games have been rained out. The rotation is even more scrambled at Double-A Tennessee, which has had its last three games postponed.

**-The Astros are expected to take RHP Brian Moehler off the disabled list to start Monday. To make room on the roster, Houston is likely to put RHP Doug Brocail, who also suffered a strained left hamstring today.

3*-Astros RHP Roy Oswalt will start again Tuesday because he left Saturday’s start after one inning and a long rain delay.

4*-Rained out in Philadelphia today, the Mets pushed their rotation back one day, so RHP John Maine will start Monday’s game.

5*-New York most likely will remove LHP Oliver Perez from its rotation. It’s not clear whether he would go to the bullpen, accept a minor league assignment or go on the disabled list because of a newly reported right knee injury. If he kept his spot in the rotation, he would start Friday. If not, taking his place could be LHP Ken Takahashi, who relieved Perez in the third inning Sunday. Expect between now and then to hear almost daily rumors that RHP Pedro Martinez would rejoin the Mets. No one seems to care that he can’t pitch any more either.

6*-LHP Cole Hamels (ankle injury) has had his next start pushed back until Friday. That has been made more possible because the Phillies pushed their rotation back a day after today’s rainout.

7*-Rained out in Washington, the Cardinals pushed RHP Kyle Lohse and the rest of their rotation back a day.

8*-The Senators also pushed their rotation back a day, so LHP John Lannan now is scheduled to start Monday.
