*-The Yankees are expected to come back with workhorse LHP C.C. Sabathia for a Game 4 start on just three days’ rest. That also would enable him also to start a seventh game, if there is one. Never let it be said that Major League Baseball, whose money-counters seem to think the Yanks and Red Sox are the only teams that matter, would add an extra day during the series’ stay in Anaheim that would seem to help New York, which has no more than three reliable starters.

*-Philadelphia has indicated that it would go in Game 2 with RHP Pedro Martinez, who hasn’t pitched since Sept. 30, instead of LHP J.A. Happ or RHP Joe Blanton, who pitched Sunday. The second time through the four-man rotation, the Phillies could skip the aging Martinez in favor of LHP Cliff Lee, who started Monday, and Blanton.
**-Blanton seems likely to be Philly’s starter in Game 4 (and 7, if necessary), with Happ in the bullpen.

Pitching Chart for Division Series
Here are the expected starters for Tuesday’s playoff game between the Tigers and Twins to get into the playoffs and for the Division Series.

*-If the Tigers win and the Twins lose Sunday, there wouldn’t be a playoff game Tuesday. RHP Rick Porcello would be the likely Game 1 starter against the Yankees, moving the remainder of Detroit’s ALDS rotation back one game. If the Tigers lose and the Twins win, Minnesota would win the American League Central and Detroit wouldn’t advance to the ALDS. Or if the teams finish the regular season tied, Tuesday’s one-game playoff would determine which team would play on.
**-The opposite scenarios from the paragraph above would apply. So if the Twins win the division title outright, RHP Scott Baker would start Game 1 in New York, and the other pitchers would move back one game. Or if Minnesota loses either after 162 games or in a Tuesday playoff, the Twins wouldn’t advance to the ALDS.
3*-It’s likely that Minnesota would use just three starters in the ALDS, meaning RHP Nick Blackburn would start Game 4, and LHP Brian Duensing and RHP Jeff Manship would move from the Twins’ rotation to their bullpen.
4*-Based on the season-ending rotation, LHP Andy Pettitte would be in line to start the second game of the Yankees’ ALDS. They could decide to move RHP A.J. Burnett ahead of Pettitte to make two ALDS starts.

**-Dodgers RHP Hiroki Kuroda will miss the NLDS because of a bulging disk in his neck. That means LHP Clayton Kershaw would be likely to pitch in Game 2 Thursday on his usual four days’ rest after pitching the division-clinching win Saturday. RHP Chad Billingsley hasn’t pitched effectively late in the season, but could be Los Angeles’ best third option.
3*-The Dodgers’ second decision would be whether to start RHPs Jon Garland or Vicente Padilla in Game 4. Padilla’s record this year is better, but Garland has a better long-range track record.
4*-The Phillies have selected more durable LHP J.A. Happ over RHP Pedro Martinez as their fourth starter for the playoffs.
5*-RHP John Smoltz, who has a far more distinguished postseason track record than RHP Kyle Lohse, is likely to be the Cardinals’ choice as their fourth starter. Both had losing records this season. With trigger-happy Tony LaRussa as manager, expect St. Louis to use plenty of pitchers in Game 4 regardless of who starts.

A general guide to your final-week fantasy pitching staff
This began as the usual 1-2 paragraph preamble to the weekly Pitching Chart, explaining any particular variations from the norm expected during that coming week.
As you can see, this week's explanation expanded to the point that it's almost as long as the chart itself, which will be coming your way in a few hours.
The season’s final week is a time for experimentation. Twenty or so teams have been or will be eliminated from playoff contention, so those would be resting veterans who don’t have a secondary goal such as a 20th (or maybe 15th) win or 200 strikeouts. Some teams will shut down rookies who have shown what they need to show for the team to go into the off-season penciling them in or out of the 2010 rotation. Pitchers with any injury from a torn rotator cuff to a hangnail will be shut down in favor of 28-year-old number three starters from the Triple-A farm team.
Then there are the Yankees, who already have clinched the American League East title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Their only goal for the four (or possibly three) pitchers who would start in the Division Series would be to line them up with the accustomed four days’ rest for their first postseason outing.
Other teams, such as the Red Sox and Angels would go into a similar mode as soon as they clinch their postseason position, which could be as early as Monday. And the losers in the playoff derby, such as the Rangers, would go into a play-it-safe mode as soon as they were eliminated. That would mean that the rookie starting a final-week game for Texas could be RHP Guillermo Moscoso instead of LHP Derek Holland.
Finally, there are a few teams in a legitimate race to get into the postseason or a more favorable playoff matchup. Fitting that description are the Tigers, Twins, Rockies and Braves. If the uncertainty extended until Sunday, they’d play that game as if it were the seventh game of the World Series. Just be glad the Cardinals aren’t in that position, or Tony LaRussa could drag the game out long enough to delay the National League playoffs by a week or so.
Your pitching goal for this week should be to protect yourself from losing pitching points and to determine other categories in which you could gamble to gain multiple pitching points if necessary. Here’s some information from an Email I sent to a fantasybaseballlscout.com subscriber:
It all depends on what you have, what you need.
If you need wins and could gain more than a point with enough wins, you'd need to stock up on pitchers who MIGHT start twice and hope that they do.
If you need saves and could gain a point or more with those, you'd need to use as many GOOD relief pitchers (preferably closers or secondary closers), you'd need to stock up on those.
If you need to protect ERA and wouldn't lose more than a point in wins, you'd need to use every GOOD reliever, or reliever who might not pitch at all as possible.
If you could gain more than a point in WHIP and wouldn't lose more in Wins than you'd gain in WHIP, you'd want GOOD relievers and want them to pitch significant innings -- unless you're trying to protect WHIP, in which case you'd want a few quality innings from GOOD relievers and maybe a pitcher or two who wouldn't pitch.
If you're in a 5x5 league and could pick up more than a point in Ks, you'd want to throw out as many strikeout pitchers as you could. Any of those who MIGHT make two starts would be musts.
General rule. GOOD relief pitchers could help you more than even good starters in three categories -- saves for sure, ERA almost certainly and WHIP if they are average or above-average control pitchers (figure < or = 3 walks per 9 innings).
General rule: Good (#1-3 in most rotations) starters could help you more in Wins and SO than relief pitchers would.
In some leagues, your choices might be dictated by rules that state minimum or maximum innings for the season. If you need to get over the minimum, you'd need starters pitching. If you need to stay under the maximum, you'd need relievers or inactive pitchers.
Absolute rule: You don't want bad pitchers (4-5 starters in most rotations, #3 starters on most bad teams, crappy relief pitchers with no chance for saves) starting for you even once. One guy giving up 4 ER in an inning could mean 2-3 hundredths lost in ERA and WHIP.

*-The Red Sox are hoping the loose fragments in RHP Tim Wakefield’s back will remain in one place long enough to allow him to pitch in a six-man rotation until Boston clinches a wild-card playoff berth.
**-Unless RHP Jake Peavy can come off the disabled list this weekend, rookie RHP Carlos Torres is the best option as the fifth starter for the White Sox as they try to remain in playoff contention.
3*-The Indians seem likely to keep a fraudulent prospect, RHP Carlos Carrasco, in a six-man rotation. The alternative might be to arrest the Phillies for stealing LHP Cliff Lee.
4*-LHP Jarrod Washburn could start twice this week if a painful left knee doesn’t prevent him from pitching.
5*-The Tigers are moving RHP Eddie Bonine into their rotation because LHP Nate Robertson is suffering from pelvic inflammation and RHP Armando Galarraga has an inflamed elbow.
6*-RHP Chad Gaudin pitched well enough in his most recent start to remain as the Yankees’ fifth starter.
7*-Rookie RHP Clayton Mortensen will stay in the Athletics’ rotation until RHP Vin Mazzaro recovers from a shoulder injury.
8*-RHP Brandon Morrow won for the first time in Friday’s start, and is now part of the Mariners’ five-man rotation.
9*-Sunday’s doubleheader meant that the Rays will need a sixth starter. RHP Andy Sonnanstine was manager Joe Maddon’s choice.
10*-The Rangers also played a makeup doubleheader Sunday. RHP Dustin Nippert was selected to be the sixth starter charged with trying to right a sinking ship.
11*-Rookie LHP Derek Holland is still in Texas’ rotation even though his pitches appear to have flattened out, making them much easier to hit.
12*-The Blue Jays have shut down rookie LHP Brett Cecil. They moved LHP David Purcey into the rotation as Cecil’s replacement. It’s likely that Toronto would move RHP Roy Halladay ahead of Purcey to start Sunday.

*-The Diamondbacks are giving RHP Kevin Mulvey, acquired on waivers from the Minnesota organization, a trial in their rotation. If he were really good, Mulvey would be pitching for the Twins now.
**-Arizona could move ace RHP Dan Haren ahead of RHP Bill Buckner to start Sunday’s game.
3*-The Braves have indicated they would keep rookie RHP Tommy Hanson in their rotation until they are eliminated from playoff contention.
4*-RHP Jose Contreras’ strained right quadriceps left an opening in the contending Rockies’ rotation. They have chosen to fill it by promoting RHP Esmil Rogers.
5*-The Astros could move their ace, LHP Wandy Rodriguez, ahead of struggling RHP Felipe Paulino in their rotation.
6*-LHP Randy Wolf may have recovered sufficiently from a hyperextended elbow to start Tuesday’s game. It’s only against the Pirates, so that’s no big deal.
7*-RHP Vicente Padilla has pitched well for LA, but he could be out of the rotation once LHP Clayton Kershaw returns from a back injury.
8*-Because of LHP Manny Parra’s neck spasms, the Brewers had LHP Chris Narveson make his first major league start since 2006 on Sunday. That would put him in line to start again Friday if Parra couldn’t go then.
9*-RHP Tim Redding pitched well enough Sunday in a loss to the Phillies for the Mets to keep him as part of a six-man rotation.
10*-Cardinals RHP John Smoltz couldn’t start Monday because of a shoulder injury. He’s scheduled for a side session this week. If his shoulder allows, Smoltz would start Sunday, with RHP Todd Wellemeyer returning to the bullpen.
11*-An MRI exam on RHP Kyle Lohse’s forearm showed he should be physically sound enough to start for St. Louis Friday.
12*-Padres RHP Edward Mujica pitched well enough as a starter in four scoreless innings Friday to earn another start.
13*-RHP Tim Lincecum missed Tuesday’s start because of a sore back, but returned to pitch Monday.
14*-The Nationals promoted RHP Marco Estrada to fill in as their fifth starter Saturday. Next, they’ll try LHP Ross Detwiler again in that role, on Friday.

Pitching Chart, Sept. 7-13
Again this week, and for the remainder of the season, each team’s rotation will be in flux. In addition to pitchers moving on to the active roster from the minors or other teams, major league teams will be shutting down some young pitchers whose innings the team wants to limit. I’m not saying they should; it’s just fashionable to do that these days.

*-RHP Carlos Torres has taken over as the fifth starter for the White Sox. He defeated the Cubs Thursday in this season’s final interleague game.
**-Because they are limiting LHP David Huff to 170 innings this season, the Indians have added RHP Carlos Carrasco to make a six-man rotation. Cleveland has had problems with its fifth starters this year; don’t expect Carrasco to be even that good as a sixth starter.
3*-LHP Jarrod Washburn has been having knee trouble. If he couldn’t start Wednesday, expect the Tigers to restore RHP Armando Galarraga to their rotation.
4*-Detroit manager Jim Leyland said LHP Nate Robertson has earned a regular rotation role with his pitching in two starts since returning from elbow surgery.
5*-Don’t be surprised if the Yankees skip inconsistent RHP Sergio Mitre, who gave up 11 runs today, and move LHP C.C. Sabathia and RHP A.J. Burnett ahead one day, but still on four or five days’ rest. On the other hand, New York’s lead in the American League East could be secure enough that they would want their starters to pitch less frequently.
6*-The Athletics have added to their rotation RHP Clayton Mortensen, acquired from the Cardinals in the Matt Holliday trade. Mortensen was not living up to his billing in the St. Louis organization.
7*-RHP Wade Davis made an auspicious start in his major league debut today. He could replace RHP Andy Sonnanstine in the Rays’ rotation.
8*-The Rangers are moving RHP Tommy “Big-Game” Hunter ahead of fragile RHP Brandon McCarthy to start Monday’s game.
9*-RHP Kevin Millwood and LHP Derek Holland have pitched poorly recently. Texas could decide to replace one of them with RHP Dustin Nippert, who lost his starting job when McCarthy most recently came off the disabled list.
10*-The Blue Jays already have shut down LHP Marc Rzepczynski for the season; they’re expected to do the same with LHP Brett Cecil after Thursday’s start.

*-With a day off Monday, the Braves could move RHP Derek Lowe ahead of RHP Tommy Hanson to start Wednesday.
**-RHP Justin Lehr is nursing a groin injury, so the Reds are bringing LHP Matt Maloney back from Triple-A Louisville to start Tuesday. Lehr said he thought he would miss only one turn, which would put him back in the rotation Sunday.
3*-Even with two former starters, RHP Chris Volstad and LHP Andrew Miller back up from Triple-A New Orleans, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said he would keep the current rotation intact. A poor start by RHP Rick Vanden Hurk Tuesday could put one of the other pitchers back into a starting role Sunday.
4*-Dodgers RHP Hiroki Kuroda returned from the disabled list to start (and lose) tonight. His next start would be scheduled for Saturday.
5*-Sunday’s doubleheader means the Phillies would have to add a sixth starter. The most likely candidate is LHP Jamey Moyer, who went to the bullpen when they activated RHP Pedro Martinez.
6*-The Pirates promoted RHP Daniel McCutchen from Triple-A Indianapolis to add a sixth starter to their rotation.
7*-RHP Charlie Morton moved back three days in the rotation, until Friday, because of a groin injury.
8*-Cardinals RHP Mitchell Boggs had his most successful major league start Saturday, but still Monday’s off day means St. Louis could move RHPs Joel Pineiro, Chris Carpenter and John Smoltz ahead of Boggs.
9*-RHP Mat Latos would be in line to start Friday’s game, but the Padres have shut the rookie down for this season. A possible replacement could be RHP Edward Mujica from the bullpen, or San Diego could use a pitcher such as RHP Cesar Carrillo from Triple-A Portland’s depleted rotation.
10*-RHP Brad Penny, signed after the Red Sox rotation, made a successful debut with the Giants and is in line to start again Monday.
11*-Nationals RHP Craig Stammen has undergone season-ending surgery. Likely to replace him in Washington’s rotation is RHP Collin Balester. Another possibility would be RHP Shairon Martis.

*-RHP Tim Wakefield (back injury) will return from the disabled list to the Red Sox rotation – most likely replacing RHP Brad Penny, whose next start would be Wednesday. While the Yankees were hammering Penny Friday, Wakefield was allowing only one run and two hits in 5 2//3 innings in an injury-rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket. He indicated he has been ready to pitch for a while but his back bothered him while fielding.
**-RHP Freddy Garcia returned from Triple-A Charlotte to make his first major league start this season, and would have his next turn Monday. His place in the White Sox rotation could be short-lived, however, because RHP Jake Peavy is expected to be ready to pitch again in the majors Saturday. He gave up three earned runs in four innings Tuesday for Charlotte, and in his next start Sunday is likely to face another rehabbing major leaguer, RHP Tim Hudson of the Braves’ Triple-A team at Gwinnett.
3*-The Tigers are playing with 11 pitchers on their roster – which should be enough, but other major league teams have 12 or 13. As if a guy who’s not good enough to be the 11th pitcher on their staff could actually help. Anyway, Detroit might add a seventh reliever by going briefly with a four-man rotation. Thursday’s off day would make it possible for them to send RHP Armando Galarraga briefly to the minor leagues and bring him back Tuesday, Sept. 1, when the team next would need a fifth starter.
4*-Angels LHP Joe Saunders could return from the DL to start Wednesday. Otherwise, that would be RHP Sean O’Sullivan’s turn in the rotation. He or fellow rookie RHP Trevor Bell, an even more recent arrival in the majors, could lose a starting role. Saunders threw 55 pitches in a simulated game Friday.
5*-After the Rangers hammered RHP Anthony Swarzak, the Twins demoted him to Triple-A Rochester. Up from the Red Wings to make his major league debut Tuesday will be RHP Armando Gabino.
6*-Rookie LHP Brian Duensing is Minnesota’s scheduled starter Sunday. He would be on schedule to start again Friday, but the Twins might skip him and push veteran RHPs Carl Pavano and Scott Baker ahead of Duensing.
7*-With Monday’s off day, the Yankees can skip RHP Chad Gaudin, who last started Wednesday, to have him pitch Saturday – 10 days later.
8*-The Athletics signed RHP Brett Tomko after the Yanks released him from their bullpen, and added the veteran to their young rotation.
9*-The Blue Jays expect to keep two rookies, LHP Marc Rzepczynski and RHP Scott Richmond, in their rotation for now but shut them down in September to keep down their innings pitched. Rookie LHP Ricky Romero, who has spent time on the disabled list this season, would continue to start in September.

*-Cubs RHP Carlos Zambrano is coming off the disabled list to start Monday, replacing LHP Tom Gorzelanny in the rotation.
**-An oddity in this week’s schedule, with a wraparound series ending Monday at Colorado, is that Rockies RHP Jason Marquis and Giants LHP Barry Zito are scheduled to pitch against each other twice. The games could have a major impact on the teams’ battle for the National League wild card, and I like Zito in the matchups Monday and Saturday.
3*-The Rockies expected to put RHP Aaron Cook, whose velocity was down Friday because of a sore shoulder, on the disabled list. Taking his place in their rotation could be RHPs Adam Eaton or Josh Fogg from the bullpen, or RHP Jhoulys Chacin from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Chacin, who began this season at Double-A Tulsa, pitched 5 1/3 innings Tuesday in a four-man combined no-hitter for Colorado Springs. A week earlier, he had started and lost for the Rockies against the Pirates.
4*-RHP Anibal Sanchez came off the 60-day disabled list to start for the Marlins Friday. His next scheduled turn would be Thursday.
5*-The off day Monday would give the Astros an opportunity to move LHP Wandy Rodriguez ahead of rookie RHP Yorman Bazardo, who started Wednesday’s game. He would have another chance as the fifth starter Saturday.
6*-Injuries have moved RHP Jeff Weaver from the Dodgers’ bullpen to a starting role. He started Thursday’s game, and would be in line to go again Wednesday.
7*-The Brewers would like RHP Jeff Suppan to return to their rotation Tuesday from an injury-rehab assignment. However, he struggled Thursday for Triple-A Nashville, allowing five runs in 3 2/3 innings. If he’s ready, Suppan would replace RHP Carlos Villanueva as a starter.
8*-RHP Pedro Martinez is scheduled to pitch Sunday and again Friday. He pitched better Tuesday than he had in his first start as a Phillie. Pedro went just three innings Tuesday, but he left because of a rain delay and not because he was ineffective.
9*-RHP Kyle Lohse left Friday’s game after suffering a strained left groin muscle while leaving the batter’s box. He could go on the DL and miss his start Friday. RHP Mitchell Boggs would be the likely replacement for Lohse. RHP Blake Hawksworth also could be an ineffective substitute.
10*-RHP John Smoltz is scheduled to make his first start for the Cardinals Sunday, which would put him in line to start again Saturday. He was just 2-5 when the Red Sox released him.

*-The White Sox are bringing up RHP Freddy Garcia from Triple-A Charlotte to start Tuesday and possibly to replace RHP Jose Contreras in their rotation after RHP Jake Peavy comes off the disabled list. Garcia has lost all three International League starts this year, but gave up just two runs on eight hits in six innings for the Knights Tuesday. Other possibilities for Chicago’s rotation could be RHP Carlos Torres from Charlotte or 22-year-old RHP Daniel Hudson, who has just reached Charlotte and is 13-5 at four levels of the minors this season.
**-Twenty-two-year-old RHP Trevor Bell, who had no decision his first major league start Wednesday against the Rays, is scheduled to make his next start in the Angels’ rotation. He was 7-7 between Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake.
3*-The Yankees have been trying to push RHP Joba Chamberlain back in their rotation, but that won’t happen for another week. They moved him up to start today to help an overworked bullpen. That sent RHP Chad Gaudin’s next start until Wednesday. He could push RHP Sergio Mitre, who won Saturday’s game, out of the rotation.
4*-RHP Justin Duchscherer is expected to make his first start for the Athletics Tuesday after recovering from elbow surgery in March. He pitched five innings Tuesday in the Rookie Arizona League. Oakland could be showcasing Duchscherer for a trade. LHP Dallas Braden (infected left foot) also could return soon to the A’s rotation.
5*-The Blue Jays could move LHP Marc Rzepczynski ahead of RHP Scott Richmond in their rotation to break up a string of lefthanded starters.

*-LHP Ted Lilly (inflamed shoulder) seems ready to come off the disabled list to start for the Cubs Monday. He pitched five scoreless innings Wednesday for low Class A Peoria.
**-Astros RHP Roy Oswalt (lower back injury) returned to the rotation Tuesday and gave up six runs. He’s scheduled to pitch today, and again Saturday.
3*-The Dodgers plan to start knuckleballing RHP Charlie Haeger, just up from Triple-A Albuquerque, Monday against the Cardinals.
4*-RHP Chad Billingsley is expected back from the strained left hamstring that kept him from making Wednesday’s scheduled start.
5*-Another blow to LA’s rotation could be Saturday night’s line drive that hit RHP Hiroki Kuroda on the side of his head and bounced into the stands for a double. Kuroda spent the night in a hospital. If Kuroda couldn’t start Thursday, the Dodgers could again move RHP Jeff Weaver out of the bullpen or call up LHPs Eric Stults or Scott Elbert from Albuquerque. LA also has been looking at free-agent RHPs John Smoltz and Vicente Padilla.
6*-RHP Mike Burns won Saturday’s game for the Brewers, but if RHP Braden Looper pitches well today he could move ahead of Burns in the rotation and still pitch on four days’ rest.
7*-RHP Pedro Martinez has replaced LHP Jamie Moyer in the Phillies’ rotation. Pedro won his first start Wednesday despite giving up three runs in five innings because Cubs RHP Jeff Samardzija, as I predicted last week, was even worse.
8*-With RHP Todd Wellemeyer (inflamed elbow) on the disabled list, the Cardinals recalled RHP Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis to move into their rotation. Boggs has been ineffective in earlier major league stints.
9*-RHP Cesar Carrillo, who pitched most of this season at Double-A San Antonio, has moved into the Padres’ rotation. That has created a confusing, sound-alike order of Correia and Carrillo.

*-The Orioles have added RHP Chris Tillman, their best pitching prospect to their rotation.
**-Baltimore’s next best pitching prospect could be LHP Brian Matusz, who has been pitching at Double-A Bowie. The BaySox removed him from today’s start after one inning, fueling speculation that he could start Tuesday’s game with RHP Brad Bergesen on the disabled list. Orioles president Andy MacPhail said that was a “strong possibility.”
3*-RHP Clay Buchholz is in the Red Sox rotation with RHP Tim Wakefield on the DL.
4*-The White Sox can move their fifth starter back a few days because Monday’s off day will enable other pitchers to move ahead and stay on four days’ rest. RHP D.J. Carrasco moved from the bullpen to start Friday and could start again Saturday. Other options could be RHPs Carlos Torres (from Triple-A Charlotte) or Bartolo Colon (from the disabled list).
5*-RHP Fausto Carmona came back from the minors to start Friday’s game, and is expected to stay in the Indians’ rotation at least until they can give RHP Justin Masterson, acquired from the Red Sox, enough innings to grow from his relief role to a starting job.
6*-Newly acquired LHP Jarrod Washburn has moved from the Mariners’ rotation to Detroit’s since the teams’ trade-deadline deal.
7*-The Angels are expected to recall RHP Sean O’Sullivan from his minor league assignment to start Saturday’s game when they next need a fifth starter.
8*-RHP Sergio Mitre is the Yankees’ current fifth starter. Even though they have Monday off, they’re moving Mitre ahead in the rotation so he can pitch against the Blue Jays instead of in their key weekend series vs. the Red Sox.
9*-Rookie LHP Lucas French, acquired from Detroit in the Washburn trade, has moved into the Mariners’ rotation.
10*-RHP Ian Snell, another acquisition near the trade deadline, is taking Washburn’s place in the rotation Sunday. That would put him in line for his next start Saturday.
11*-Rangers RHP has a strained gluteus maximus, aka pain in the ass, which limited his last start to two innings and delayed his next one from Sunday until Monday. It’s possible he still might not be able to pitch then. Texas had RHP Doug Mathis scratched from tonight’s start with Triple-A Oklahoma City in case he’s needed to take Millwood’s place Monday.

*-The Diamondbacks are keeping ineffective RHP Yusmeiro Petit in their rotation for now. That’s mostly because the minor league pitchers who might step in are either hurting or struggling.
**-LHP Tom Gorzelanny, who was part of the trade that sent RHP Kevin Hart to the Pirates, is taking Hart’s place in the Cubs’ rotation. Starting pitching is clearly the strength of shell-of-a-major league-team Pittsburgh, which has provided other teams with two starters who weren’t even in the Bucs’ rotation: Gorzelanny and Snell.
3*-The Reds promoted journeyman RHP Justin Lehr, who was pitching pretty well as a starter at Triple-A Louisville, to their rotation. He made his first start for Cincinnati Monday. That’s not the best news, but it’s far better than knowing that RHP Edinson Volquez will undergo elbow surgery Monday.
4*-The Astros are hoping RHP Roy Oswalt (lower back injury) will be able to make his next start Tuesday. If he couldn’t pitch then, a possibility could be RHP Samuel Gervacio, just up from Triple-A Round Rock, or RHP Yorman Bazardo or another pitcher elevated from the Express.
5*-Houston already has recalled RHP Bud Norris from Round Rock to take the rotation vacancy created when the Astros released RHP Russ Ortiz.
6*-RHP Mike Burns returned to the Brewers’ rotation tonight, which would put him in line for his next start Friday.
7*-The off day Monday could make it possible for Milwaukee to bypass its fifth starter for a while. LHP Manny Parra could start on his usual four days’ rest Saturday. Another option would be to use RHP Carlos Villanueva, scheduled to pitch Sunday as the Brewers’ fifth starter. Villanueva is a better pitcher than he has shown while pitching badly in relief this season.
8*-RHP Tim Redding, who has used up six or seven lives in the Mets’ rotation this season, seems likely to gain another reprieve by replacing scuffling RHP Livan Hernandez for at least Monday’s start.
9*-LHP Cliff Lee, the biggest name changing teams during last week’s trades, won his first start for the Phillies Friday. His next scheduled start would be Wednesday.
10*-It’s likely that RHP Virgil Vasquez made his final start in the Pirates’ rotation tonight, and that RHP Kevin Hart would replace Vasquez to start Thursday.
11*-Just a note to remind you that I was bullish on RHP Mat Latos even when he was pitching for Double-A San Antonio this season. He has done well in his first few starts since jumping to the Padres’ rotation.
12*-LHP Clayton Richard, acquired from the White Sox in the deadline deal for RHP Jake Peavy, made his first start for the Padres tonight and is scheduled to pitch again Thursday. Richard and Latos provide significant upgrades in San Diego’s rotation.

Pitching Chart, July 27-Aug. 2
This could be one of the least predictable lists we’ll have all season, with the possible exception of the first week in September when pitchers have been brought up from the minors. The trade deadline falls on Friday, so some pitchers could be making starts for teams other than the one they’re listed with here. Some others would be bumped from rotations and still others could miss a day or two while traveling to join their new team.

*-The Orioles seem willing to give ineffective LHP Rich Hill one more chance in their rotation. He’s still expected to start Tuesday or Wednesday, but he could be pitching for his job. If Hill isn’t effective then, expect Baltimore to recall RHP Chris Tillman from Triple-A Norfolk to join their rotation.
**-RHP Bartolo Colon pitched well enough in Friday’s doubleheader to regain a spot in the White Sox rotation. He’ll replace LHP Clayton Richard.
3*-Royals RHP Gil Meche doesn’t seem ready to return from the disabled list, so LHP Bruce Chen seems likely to start Monday. That could be his last start, because Meche could be able to start for Kansas City Saturday. Another possibility would be for Chen to stay in the rotation, replacing RHP Sir Sidney Ponson.
4*-Because of Thursday’s off day, the Angels could move LHP Joe Saunders and others ahead in the rotation ahead of tonight’s starter, RHP Matt Palmer.
5*-With LHP Garrett Olson likely to go to the bullpen, the Mariners still will need a fifth starter. They could be leaning toward moving RHP Chris Jakubauskas from the bullpen. Other possibilities would be LHP Jason Vargas or RHP Brandon Morrow from Triple-A Tacoma.
6*-The Rangers still are listing RHP Vicente Padilla as Tuesday’s starter even though he has been diagnosed as having the swine flu virus. If he couldn’t pitch then or Sunday, RHP Dustin Nippert again would take Padilla’s place.

*-RHP Ryan Dempster is expected off the disabled list to start Tuesday and to take the rotation spot of LHP Ted Lilly, who has gone on the DL and will have both shoulder and knee surgeries that are expected to keep him out a month or so.

3*-The Brewers are expected to recall RHP Tim Dillard from Triple-A Nashville to start Tuesday.
4*-With RHP Fernando Nieve on the disabled list, the Mets recalled LHP Jonathan Niese from Triple-A Buffalo to start today’s game. That would put him in line to start again Thursday.
5*-When the Nationals put RHP Jordan Zimmermann on the disabled list, they promoted RHP Collin Balester to take that rotation spot.

*-The Orioles are recalling RHP David Hernandez from his minor league assignment to start Monday’s game.

3*-Rookie LHP Lucas French has moved into the Tigers’ rotation and had pitched well.
4*-Detroit will need a sixth starter this week because of Thursday’s doubleheader. The most likely candidate is RHP Zach Miner from the bullpen. None of the pitchers who are in line to pitch at Triple-A Toledo (Ruddy Lugo, 29, or Scott Drucker, 27) or Double-A Erie (Thad Weber, 24) appears to be a viable option.
5*-RHP Anthony Swarzak is back in the Twins’ rotation with RHP Kevin Slowey on the disabled list. Swarzak is kind of like Slowey lite.
6*-The Yankees are recalling RHP Sergio Mitre from Triple-A Scranton. He served a 50-day suspension this season for using andro, which is banned now but wasn’t when Mark McGwire used to have it in his locker.
7*-The Mariners will need a fifth starter Saturday. That pitcher is likely to be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. In addition to LHP Jason Vargas, options are RHP Brandon Morrow and lefty Ryan Rowland-Smith.
8*-Rookie LHP Marc Rzepczynski solidified his spot in the Blue Jays' rotation by beating the Red Sox Saturday.
9*-When Toronto needs a fifth starter Saturday, they’d be likely to recall LHP David Purcey, who would be on schedule to move up from the Triple-A Las Vegas rotation.

*-The Braves will recall RHP Tommy Hanson from the high Class A Myrtle Beach roster to start Monday.
**-LHP Ted Lilly had his start pushed back because of a sore left knee, but he’s expected to be ready Monday. If he couldn’t pitch, LHP Sean Marshall could move from the bullpen to the Cubs’ rotation. He also could replace RHP Kevin Hart, today’s starter.
3*-RHP Rick VandenHurk is expected to return from the minors to start Monday for the Marlins. It’s likely that Florida would move RHP Ricky Nolasco ahead of VandenHurk to start Sunday on the usual four days’ rest. Even though RHP Josh Johnson pitched just two innings before Saturday’s game was rained out, he’s not expected to start again until Friday. He’d be trying to extend his streak of starts allowing three or fewer earned runs to 17.
4*-The Dodgers are bringing RHP Jason Schmidt off the disabled list to start Monday. He hasn’t pitched in the majors for more than two years, and has been recovering from shoulder surgery. It’s likely that LA would move LHP Randy Wolf ahead of Schmidt to start Sunday so the righty could get additional rest before breaking into an every-five-days schedule.
5*-RHP Mike Burns is the Brewers’ fifth starter while RHP David Bush is on the disabled list. Burns might start Saturday, or Milwaukee could use LHP Manny Parra, who started Saturday’s game.
6*-The Phillies will bring back RHP Joe Blanton Tuesday. He pitched just 1 1/3 innings before Saturday’s game was rained out.
7*-The Padres have brought a former first-round draft pick, RHP Tim Stauffer, back from the minors to pitch in their rotation.
8*-There’s more excitement in San Diego about RHP Mat Latos, who’s scheduled to start in his major league debut today. That would put the pitcher who dominated the Double-A Texas League on schedule to start again Friday.
9*-Giants RHP Ryan Sadowski is another pitcher who was reassigned to the minor leagues before the All-Star break because his team didn’t need a fifth starter. He has been a pleasant surprise so far.
10*-The Nationals brought RHP Garrett Mock back from the minors to start today. He would be on schedule to start again Friday.

Pitching Chart, July 13-19
This would seem to be an easy week to figure out pitching rotations, because there are regular-season games being played just Friday-Saturday, with a few games Thursday. But with at least three days off, teams will be readjusting their rotation to try to get their ace an additional start. However, some of those aces could be pitching in Tuesday’s All-Star game, which would push the start for their team possibly back to Saturday or Sunday. In addition, many teams haven’t indicated their pitching plans, so in some cases it’s a best guest as to which pitchers they might skip this week.
Figure it this way. If you have a fifth starter in your rotation, you shouldn’t be starting him anyway if you want to win your league title. We’ll try to indicate which starter would be No. 4 and likely to pitch for teams that are playing Thursday.

*-The Orioles will skip LHP Rich Hill’s turn in the rotation.
**-The Red Sox could move RHP Josh Beckett and LHP Jon Lester, their two best starting pitchers, ahead in their rotation. The All-Star game could have an impact. Boston is likely to skip RHPs Brad Penny and John Smoltz for now.
3*-Expect the White Sox to bypass LHP Clayton Richard and RHP Jose Contreras this week.
4*-The Indians have indicated that they would skip RHP Carl Pavano.
5*-The Tigers are moving RHP Justin Verlander ahead of RHP Edwin Jackson, who is in the All-Star game.
6*-RHP Gil Meche is not slated to move ahead in the Royals’ rotation to pitch this week. He has said he’d exercise the no-trade clause in his contract to stay in Kansas City, but Meche’s 4-8 record isn’t exactly what small-market KC is paying him eight figures to do.
7*-The Twins are skipping RHP Nick Blackburn.
8*-The Yankees’ plan is to skip LHP Andy Pettitte.
9*-LHPs Dallas Braden and Brett Anderson will move ahead of RHP Vin Mazzaro in the Athletics’ rotation.
10*-The Mariners eliminated any controversy over their rotation by optioning RHP Brandon Morrow to Triple-A Tacoma.
11*-Rookie RHP Jeff Niemann and LHP David Price will watch from the bullpen because the Rays are going with their more experienced starters.
12*-The Rangers have moved RHP Kevin Millwood, their nominal ace back in the rotation, so he wouldn’t start this week.

*-Diamondbacks RHP Dan Haren, who is in the All-Star game, probably wouldn’t start before Saturday. Arizona will skip RHP Max Scherzer’s turn this week.
**-RHP Javier Vazquez is likely to return to the Braves’ rotation Thursday. RHP Kris Medlen started today in place of Vazquez, who was suffering from an abdominal strain. Atlanta put its fifth starter, rookie RHP Tommy Hanson, on the high Class A Myrtle Beach roster.
3*-The Cubs’ current pitching has been determined because RHP Ryan Dempster (broken right big toe) went on the disabled list.
4*-The Reds are moving RHP Aaron Harang ahead of RHP Johnny Cueto, and skipping RHP Micah Owings for now.
5*-When the Marlins optioned LHP Sean West to Double-A Jacksonville, that left them with four starters.
6*-The odd man out of the Astros’ rotation is RHP Brian Moehler.
7*-The Dodgers are likely to skip over their fifth starter, RHP Jeff Weaver.
8*-Expect RHP Yovani Gallardo to move ahead of RHP Mike Burns in the Brewers’ rotation. RHP Seth McClung or newly recalled LHP Manny Parra could take Burns’ place Sunday.
9*-The Mets could skip LHP Oliver Perez instead of RHP Fernando Nieve, and could move LHP Johan Santana ahead in the rotation if he doesn’t pitch much in the All-Star game.
10*-The Pirates are skipping their fourth starter, RHP Ross Ohlendorf.
11*-With RHP Joel Pineiro pitching well, the Cardinals are likely to skip RHP Todd Wellemeyer. RHP Chris Carpenter’s start could move ahead or back a day, depending on whether he pitches in the All-Star game.
12*-The Giants have questions in their rotation. RHP Tim Lincecum could move back if he pitches in the All-Star game, and RHP Tim Cain might not be able to pitch in Ss. Louis Tuesday or make a start this week because a line drive hit him during Saturday’s start. San Francisco has LHP Barry Zito available to fill in.
13*-The Nationals would push RHP Craig Stammen’s next start back to next week.

*-The White Sox are moving LHP Clayton Richard ahead in their rotation to pitch on three days’ rest Thursday against the Indians. That would allow them to go with three more experienced pitchers, LHPs John Danks and Mark Buehrle and RHP Gavin Floyd, in a more important series against the Twins.
**-The Indians had hoped to bring LHP Aaron Laffey (oblique muscle injury) back from the disabled list to start Wednesday. However, he gave up seven runs in four innings in an injury-rehab start Friday for Triple-A Columbus. If Cleveland decides to give Laffey another rehab appearance, RHP Tomo Ohka could remain in the rotation for now.
3*-LHP Lucas French made his first major league start Friday, lasting into the fifth inning. That apparently was good enough to earn the 23-year-old control pitcher another start for the Tigers Wednesday.
4*-Detroit seems likely to move RHP Justin Verlander ahead of struggling RHP Armando Galarraga to start Sunday’s game. That would keep Verlander on his usual every-five-days schedule.
5*-Angels RHP Ervin Santana (strained elbow ligament) returned from the disabled list to give up six runs in five innings Friday. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday.
6*-Twins RHP Kevin Slowey (strained wrist) took his 10 wins to the disabled list. Starting in his place Wednesday would be RHP Anthony Swarzak, who pitched well for Minnesota in an earlier stint before being returned to Triple-A Rochester.
7*-Yankees RHP Chien-Ming Wang left Saturday’s start in the sixth inning, and is expected to return to the disabled list. A likely candidate to take Wang’s next scheduled start Thursday would be RHP Sergio Mitre, currently with Triple-A Scranton.
8*-LHP Erik Bedard (shoulder) threw 54 pitches in a simulated game Friday, and will come off the DL to start Tuesday’s game for the Mariners. He would replace LHP Garrett Olson in the rotation.
9*-With an off day Monday, the Rays put RHP Jeff Niemann into the bullpen for their weekend series at Texas. He’s expected to return to their rotation to start Saturday’s game.
10*-The Rangers pushed RHP Vicente Padilla (sore shoulder) back to Tuesday from this weekend’s scheduled start. If he couldn’t pitch Tuesday, a possibility would be to activate RHP Dustin Nippert, who has pitched well on his rehab assignment.
11*-The Blue Jays are recalling LHP Brad Mills from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Tuesday’s game. He’s just 2-8 with the 51s, but pitched eight shutout innings in his most recent game. Don’t be surprised if RHP Roy Halladay jumps ahead of Mills to get in another start Sunday before the All-Star game, even though that would be on three days’ rest.
12*-LHP Brett Cecil has replaced RHP Scott Richmond in Toronto’s rotation for starts today and Friday. Richmond (biceps tendinitis) is the ninth Jays pitcher to go on the disabled list this season.

*-Diamondbacks RHP Yusmeiro Petit returned from the disabled list to start Saturday, and would be on schedule to pitch again Thursday.
**-Thursday’s off day gives the Cubs a chance to keep their regular rotation despite Sunday’s doubleheader against the Cardinals. RHP Randy Wells would have an extra day of rest, and RHP Ryan Dempster would be on his usual every-fifth-day schedule.
3*-In Houston, the Astros and Nationals will begin Thursday what amounts to a five-game series by completing a game suspended by rain May 5 in Washington. The Nationals will remain the home team, batting in the bottom of the 11th inning with the score tied 10-10, one out and a runner on first base. Houston RHP LaTroy Hawkins was pitching when the game was stopped, so he’d be the likely candidate to begin Thursday on the mound. That’s unless he works for an extended period in Wednesday’s game. Another possibility would be RHP Felipe Paulino.
4*-Off days have allowed the Dodgers to skip LHP Eric Milton’s turn in their rotation, but a fifth starter would be needed again Saturday. Milton is the most likely starter for that game, but RHP Claudio Vargas, just off the disabled list, also could be a candidate.
5*-When the Brewers again need a fifth starter Saturday, RHP Seth McClung is most likely to receive the call and the ball.
6*-Nearing the point of desperation, the Mets will bring ineffective LHP Oliver Perez off the disabled list to start Tuesday. That would send ineffective RHP Tim Redding to their ineffective bullpen.
7*-The Phillies dusted off RHP Rodrigo Lopez Friday for his first major league appearance in two years. He started and won that game, earning another shot in Wednesday’s game.
8*-It seems likely that the Pirates would bring LHP Paul Maholm back on his usual four days’ rest to start Sunday’s game, moving him ahead of less experienced RHP Virgil Vasquez.
9*-The Cardinals are planning to have RHP Kyle Lohse, who’s scheduled for an injury-rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Memphis, come off the disabled list as their sixth starter for Sunday’s doubleheader.
10*-The Nationals have returned RHP Craig Stammen to their rotation.
11*-Washington wouldn’t even need a pitcher to complete the suspended game Thursday if it scores a run in the bottom of the 11th. If that happens, the winning pitcher would be RHP Joel Hanrahan, now with the Pirates. The Nationals also will need a pinch runner. OF Elijah Dukes, the runner on first base, is now with Triple-A Syracuse. If the game goes into the 12th inning, Washington could use RHP Mike MacDougal to try to hold down the Astros.

*-The Orioles recalled RHP David Hernandez from Triple-A Norfolk to start today’s game in place of RHP Koji Uehara, who has gone on the disabled list because of elbow tendinitis. Hernandez’s next scheduled start would be Friday.
**-RHP John Smoltz remains in Boston’s rotation after a shaky start in his 2009 debut this week. He would start again Tuesday.
3*-Tigers RHP Alfredo Figaro remains in their injury-affected rotation after an OK start and one that wasn’t as good.
4*-The Royals purchased Quadruple-A LHP Bruce Chen’s contract from Triple-A Omaha to start Saturday’s game. He wasn’t awful, and would start again Thursday.
5*-For now, rookie RHP Sean O’Sullivan is in the Angels’ rotation. RHP Ervin Santana could be back from the disabled list before long. He’s scheduled to throw 45 pitches in the Rookie Class Arizona League today.
6*-LHP Scott Kazmir returned from the disabled list to start Saturday, and continued to have difficulty with a high pitch count (92 in five innings). His next start would be Friday. He’s taking the rotation spot of RHP Andy Sonnanstine, who was optioned to Triple-A Durham.
7*-Rangers LHP Matt Harrison (shoulder injury) went back on the disabled list. King-sized RHP Tommy Hunter came up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start tonight, and would be on schedule to start again Saturday.
8*-Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay will return from the disabled list to start Monday.
9*-Halladay’s return will push LHP Brett Cecil’s next start back to Friday. LHP Brad Mills has been returned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

*-The Diamondbacks optioned RHP Billy Buckner to Triple-A Reno, leaving a hole in their rotation that would need to be filled Saturday. They could bring up RHPs Bryan Augenstein or Seth Etherton from Reno, or RHP Jarrod Parker from Double-A Mobile.
**-The Reds sent LHP Matt Maloney back to Triple-A Louisville, and recalled RHP Homer Bailey. He pitched well enough to beat the Indians Saturday, and would be scheduled for his next start Friday.
3*-Astros LHP Mike Hampton is expected to return from the disabled list to start Tuesday. He most likely would replace RHP Russ Ortiz in the rotation, because RHP Felipe Paulino pitched well in his return from the DL Saturday.
4*-RHP Mike Burns has moved up from Triple-A Nashville to the Brewers’ rotation. He’s replacing RHP David Bush, who went on the disabled list for the first time in his major league career.
5*-Milwaukee had another opening in its rotation because the Brewers optioned LHP Manny Parra to Nashville. RHP Seth McClung moved from the bullpen to a starting role Saturday, and would be scheduled to pitch next on Thursday.
6*-The Mets expected to have RHP John Maine back off the disabled list, but his time there will be extended because he suffered a setback while rehabbing. RHP Tim Redding will stay in the rotation until Maine returns.
7*-Phillies LHP Antonio Bastardo will miss his next start because of a strained shoulder. Philadelphia most likely will promote RHP Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start in Bastardo’s place, sometime between Thursday and Saturday. Carrasco has been considered the Phillies’ best pitching prospect, but he is 4-7 with a 4.92 ERA in the International League.
8*-When the Pirates optioned RHP Ian Snell to Triple-A Indianapolis, they replaced him with RHP Virgil Vasquez. He won his first start for Pittsburgh Friday, and would be on schedule to start again Wednesday.
9*-RHPs Jake Peavy and Chris R. Young are on the disabled list, so the Padres’ new fifth starter is RHP Josh Banks. He’s a good control pitcher who hasn’t had much success against major league batters.
10*-The Giants sent ineffective LHP Jonathan Sanchez to their bullpen and replaced him with 26-year-old RHP Ryan Sadowski. He is scheduled to start in his major league debut today and make his second start Friday. Sadowski was 5-2 with a 4.11 ERA at Triple-A Fresno.
11*-The Nationals expect LHP Scott Olsen to come off the disabled list Monday. He would take the rotation spot of RHP Craig Stammen, who is moving to a relief role.

*-RHP John Smoltz is scheduled to return from his injury-rehab assignment to make his first start for the Red Sox Thursday. For now, he’ll replace RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is undergoing tests to try to determine why he has pitched so poorly.
**-Tigers RHP Alfredo Figaro won his first major league start Saturday. His next turn in their rotation, with LHP Dontrelle Willis on the disabled list, would be Friday.
3*-The Royals have indicated that they would move RHP Gil Meche ahead of RHP Kyle Davies in their rotation to keep Meche on an every-five-days schedule.
4*-Lookee here! Twins RHP Kevin Slowey, our Jarrod Washburn Award winner, is tied for the major league lead with 10 wins.
5*-RHP Chien-ming Wang pitched well enough last week to hang on to his starting job. With RHP Phil Hughes available from the bullpen, expect the Yankees to keep Wang on a short leash.
6*-Athletics LHP Josh Outman left his most recent start in the second inning because of a flexor-extensor strain in his inner elbow. If he’s not physically able to make Wednesday’s start, LHP Gio Gonzalez would be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, where he has a 2.51 ERA.
7*-RHP Brandon Morrow once again will be a starter for the Mariners. Expect him to remain in that role even after LHP Erik Bedard comes off the disabled list.
8*-As we predicted last week, LHP Brett Cecil has returned from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill one hole in the Blue Jays’ rotation with RHPs Roy Halladay and Casey Janssen joining the remainder of this year’s projected rotation on the disabled list.
9*-Toronto will have to add another minor league starter to its rotation Saturday, and LHP David Purcey is the best bet.

5*-The Brewers optioned LHP Manny Parra to Triple-A Nashville to work on his problems, and hope those are straightened out by Saturday, when they again would need a fifth starter.
6*-RHP Brad Thompson is in the Cardinals’ rotation while RHP Kyle Lohse is on the disabled list.

*-The Reds have indicated that RHP Aaron Harang would stay on an every-five-days schedule by moving ahead of RHP Johnny Cueto in their rotation.
**-RHP Brandon Backe is backe from an injury-rehab assignment and backe in the Astros’ rotation.
3*-LHP Wandy Rodriguez is another pitcher likely to move up in his team’s rotation (ahead of RHP Brian Moehler) to remain on the usual four days’ rest.
4*-The Dodgers expect LHP Eric Milton to come off the disabled list to start Friday.
7*-The Padres opted for LHP Wade LeBlanc rather than fast-tracking RHP Mat Latos to come up from the minors and pitch in their rotation while RHPs Jake Peavy and Chris R. Young are out.
8*-RHP Walter Silva also has returned from Triple-A Portland to San Diego’s rotation.

*-It would be RHP Diasuke Matsuzaka’s turn to start Friday, but he has been struggling even since coming off the disabled list. RHP John Smoltz could return from his injury-rehab start to pitch for Boston, but it’s more likely he would pitch again for Triple-A Pawtucket. Other possibilities are for the Red Sox to trade RHP Brad Penny, who is in demand by the Phillies and other teams, or for them to go with a six-man rotation.
**-RHP Ervin Santana returned from the disabled list to make one start, but the Angels are sending him to the bullpen and reinstating undefeated RHP Matt Palmer to their rotation.
3*-Twins LHP Glen Perkins is returning from the DL to start Tuesday’s game, with RHP Anthony Swarzak returning to Triple-A Rochester despite pitching seven scoreless innings for Minnesota Saturday.
4*-RHP Chien-ming Wang could be pitching to keep his place in the rotation Wednesday. If he fails again, the Yankees could reinstate RHP Phil Hughes as a starter.
5*-The Mariners skipped LHP Eric Bedard’s start Saturday because of his sore shoulder. He’s expected back to start Friday. If he couldn’t, RHP Brandon Morrow, who’s moving back to being a starter, would pitch again in Bedard’s place.
6*-Rangers LHP Matt Harrison is coming off the disabled list after two injury-rehab starts. He’ll be replacing RHP Brandon McCarthy, who went on the DL because of a stress fracture in his shoulder blade.
7*-Wednesday’s rainout allowed the Blue Jays to skip RHP Scott Richmond in their rotation, but he’s expected to be back in to start this Wednesday.
8*-Toronto RHP Roy Halladay left Friday’s start because of a groin injury. He’ll be pushed back at least until Saturday. If he couldn’t pitch, the most likely replacement would be to bring LHP Brett Cecil back from Triple-A Las Vegas. For Halladay to pitch, “He’ll have to convince me he’s OK,” manager Cito Gaston said.

*-Cubs RHP Rich Harden returned from the disabled list to start Saturday. His next turn would come up Friday.
**-With RHP Felipe Paulino going on the disabled list, RHP Russ Ortiz has regained his place in the Astros’ rotation. He started Thursday’s game, and would be in line to pitch again Wednesday.
3*-The Dodgers will need a fifth starter Saturday. With LHPs Eric Stults and Eric Milton on the DL, the most likely candidate would be RHP Jeff Weaver.
4*-The Brewers are skipping LHP Manny Parra’s turn in their rotation, so RHP Braden Looper would move ahead to start Friday on his usual four days’ rest.
5*-RHP Fernando Nieve made his first start for the Mets Saturday and defeated the Yankees. His next start would come up Friday.
6*-RHP Charlie Morton, acquired from Atlanta in the Nate McLouth trade, pitched only one inning Wednesday in his debut with the Pirates. Pittsburgh feels the hamstring injury that sidelined him has healed sufficiently to allow him to start Monday.
7*-The Padres will have to find a starter to replace RHP Jake Peavy, who could miss up to two months because of an ankle injury. RHP Mat Latos, who is 6-0 between high Class A and Double-A San Antonio this season, would be on his regular rest if he pitched Saturday. Other possibilities are LHP Wade LeBlanc and RHP Walter Silva from Triple-A Portland.

**-The White Sox are recalling RHP Jose Contreras from Triple-A Charlotte to start one game of Monday’s doubleheader. If he pitches well, he could remain in Chicago’s rotation, to the detriment of LHP Clayton Richard or RHP Bartolo Colon.
3*-The Indians sent RHP Fausto Carmona to the Rookie Class Arizona League to reconstruct his delivery, and at least for now have moved RHP Tomo Ohka from their bullpen to take Carmona’s place in the rotation.
4*-Tigers RHP Jeremy Bonderman will make his first major league start since last season in the second game of Monday’s doubleheader. He recovered from surgery to relieve a circulatory problem to pitch eight shutout innings in his most recent injury-rehab start May 31 for Triple-A Toledo.
5*-The Royals brought RHP Luke Hochevar back from Triple-A Omaha to start Saturday. He pitched well enough to earn a victory, and would be scheduled to pitch next on Friday.
6*-RHP Kelvim Escobar, who hadn’t pitched in the majors since the 2007 playoffs, returned Saturday and pitched well for five innings. He’s back in the Angels’ rotation, and is scheduled to start again Friday.
7*-The Rangers put RHP Vicente Padilla on waivers to see whether another team might be willing to trade for a pitcher owed $8 million for the remainder of this season despite a reputation for not getting along with his teammates. Someone? Anyone? Texas’ hope most likely is that a marginal contender might be willing to gamble near the trade deadline.

*-The Braves called up their best prospect, RHP Tommy Hanson, to start today. At Triple-A Gwinnett, he was 3-3 with a 1.49 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings. His next start would be Friday.
**-LHP Matt Maloney gave up two runs in six innings Friday in his major league debut, and is scheduled to pitch next Friday.
3*-The Marlins have recalled their Opening Day starter, RHP Ricky Nolasco, from the minors to start Friday.
4*-A line drive hit Brewers RHP David Bush on his right forearm during his most recent start. He has thrown on the side since then, and expects to be able to make his next scheduled start Thursday. Monday’s off day makes it so he could be moved back a day or two without causing any other Milwaukee pitchers to start with less than four days’ rest.
5*-Monday’s game will be RHP Brad Thompson’s second as a fill-in starter. Thompson could stay in the rotation – or the Cardinals could turn to newly recalled rookie RHP Blake Hawksworth, currently slated to pitch in relief. I couldn’t recommend Hawksworth if he did join St. Louis’ rotation.
6*-The Padres could move RHP Jake Peavy ahead of RHP Josh Geer in their rotation. That wouldn’t make a difference for fantasy owners this week, because Peavy would start either Saturday or Sunday, giving him two starts in either case.
7*-The Giants have indicated they would keep struggling LHP Jonathan Sanchez in their rotation.
