*-RHP David Hernandez is the latest member of the Orioles’ new-look rotation, which so far looks much better than its old-look rotation. The 2008 Double-A Eastern League all-star won his first major league start.
**-A battle between two up-and-coming lefties will feature Chicago’s Clayton Richard and the Athletics’ Josh Outman, both 2-0 and pitching well.
3*-The Royals sent RHP Luke Hochevar to Triple-A Omaha to get some work while they didn’t need five starters in their rotation. He’s the most likely candidate to start Saturday, when KC again will need a fifth starter.
4*-In what could be the week’s best pitching matchup, Angels LHP Joe Saunders will oppose Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay Tuesday.
5*-The Twins will keep LHP Francisco Liriano, who hasn’t made it past four innings in any of his last three starts, in their rotation. That’s at least until LHP Glen Perkins could come off the disabled list in a few weeks.
6*-Yankees LHP Andy Pettitte left Friday’s start because of a stiff lower back, but said he expects to be able to pitch Wednesday.
7*-Because of Friday’s doubleheader, the Athletics will need a sixth starter for Tuesday’s game to keep everyone on at least an every-five-days schedule. The most likely candidate to start Tuesday would be RHP Vin Mazzaro. He would be pitching on that normal rest after starting one game of a doubleheader Thursday for Triple-A Sacramento, where he is 2-2 with a 2.38 ERA. Beyond Tuesday, Mazzaro could replace LHP Brett Anderson in Oakland’s rotation.
8*-LHP Garrett Olson started today for the Mariners, who have removed RHP Chris Jakubauskas from their rotation. Olson could start again Saturday, or Seattle could opt to return LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith, just off the disabled list, to its rotation.
9*-Rangers RHP Vicente Padilla said he felt fine after throwing 40 pitches in the bullpen, and is on schedule to come off the disabled list and start Tuesday’s game.
10*-To keep Halladay pitching every five days, the Blue Jays skipped Scott Richmond’s turn in the rotation over the weekend. He’ll return Saturday to make his first start in 11 days.

*-The Diamondbacks could opt to push back RHP Bill Buckner’s start Sunday to keep RHP Dan Haren on an every-five-days schedule.
**-Cubs RHP Carlos Zambrano will return from his six-game suspension to start Thursday’s game.
3*-Reds RHP Edinson Volquez, who had back spasms, is set to come off the disabled list to start Monday.
4*-Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez hasn’t announced Tuesday’s starter, but RHP Burke Badenhop seems most likely after winning his start last week.
5*-The Dodgers’ Opening Day starter, RHP Hiroki Kuroda, will come off the disabled list to start Monday. A strained oblique muscle had sideline Kuroda. He’ll take the rotation spot for now of LHP Eric Stults, who has gone on the DL because of a sprained thumb.
6*-LHP Antonio Bastardo is scheduled for his first major league start Tuesday. He has made rapid progress this season, going 3-2 with a 1.89 ERA, 5.10 strikeout/walk ratio and .189 opponents’ batting average between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. It could be a good thing Bastardo will be pitching on the road; imagine the names Phillies fans might call him if he struggled at home.
7*-It seems likely that RHP Joel Pineiro won’t be able to make his next scheduled start. His lower back injury, coupled with Kyle Lohse’s sore forearm, means that the Cardinals would need to come up with at least one additional starter this week. A likely candidate for Tuesday’s game is RHP Mitchell Boggs, scheduled to start Monday for Triple-A Memphis. The Redbirds’ Tuesday starter, RHP Clayton Mortenson, isn’t on St. Louis’ 40-man roster. Conflicting reports indicated that after missing Friday’s start Lohse could pitch Wednesday or Thursday. If he couldn’t go Wednesday, the Cards would need to add another starter (blowing up Memphis’ rotation by bringing up Mortenson as well?) because they wouldn’t want to risk an injury to RHP Chris Carpenter by having him pitch on three days’ rest.
8*-Despite an ankle injury, Padres RHP Jake Peavy is expected to make his scheduled start Tuesday. San Diego could move him ahead of RHP Kevin Correia to pitch Sunday on the usual four days’ rest.
9*-Giants LHP Randy Johnson will be going for his 300th career win Wednesday in Washington.

What's with the Yankees' red caps?
The Yankees are wearing red caps against the Rangers today.
Red caps? The Yankees?
Turns out it's the first time for New York, and apparently won't be the last.
This from the New York Times' Tyler Kepner:
"The Yankees will probably wear red caps for the first time in their history on May 25 at Texas. Major League Baseball has issued red caps for all teams, incorporating a flag design within the team logo, to be worn on Memorial Day, July 4 weekend and Sept. 11. The Yankees have not officially agreed to wear the cap — which was blue last season — but they seem likely to go along with it."

Those who have criticized Peavy for wanting to stay in the National League where he can bat don’t understand real baseball. *-RHP Matt Albers is supposed to take the rotation spot vacated when the Orioles released RHP Adam Eaton. However, Albers pitched in relief Saturday after RHP Koji Uehara left the game. If Albers isn’t ready to start Tuesday, Baltimore could bring up LHP Chris Waters, who started Wednesday for Triple-A Norfolk.

5*-The Royals have demoted RHP Luke Hochevar, whose turn would come up Friday, to Triple-A Omaha to give him a chance to make regular starts. Their short-term schedule provides off days that will allow Kansas City to go with a four-man rotation. Think of it this way: KC’s rotation will have two days of RHP Zack Greinke and none of Hochevar.
6*-RHP Anthony Swarzak pitched seven shutout innings Saturday in his major league debut against the Brewers. He replaced LHP Glen Perkins, who is on the disabled list. Swarzak is the real deal, another control pitcher from the Twins’ stockpile.
7*-RHP Edgar Gonzalez has joined the Athletics’ in-flux rotation.
8*-With LHP Scott Kazmir (left quadriceps injury) on the disabled list, the Rays have recalled LHP David Price, their former No. 1 draft pick, from Triple-A Durham.

Hot and Not
The players in these two sections were the statistical leaders during the last week. Batting averages are based on 20 at-bats, and ERA and WHIP on seven innings pitched. In most cases, we eliminate batters with an average lower than .280 and pitchers with ERAs above 4.00 from the Hot list. Keep in mind players’ career performance and current-season totals even more than current trends in deciding on whether to keep those players in your lineup.

Even though Zimmerman’s hitting streak ended, he made the Hot list for the second consecutive week.
Close to making this list were Pirates OF Brandon Moss (11-for-19, .579) and the majors’ season leader in batting average, Indians C/1B Victor Martinez (10-for-19, .526). A week earlier, Moss was on the Not list with a .100 average (2-for-20, including 0-for-14 going into last week). Those two players illustrate that sometimes Hot or Not hitters stay that way from one week to the next, but natural fluctuations in performance mean that sometimes a player who is Not will turn Hot, or vice versa.

Ray looked good in beating the White Sox Saturday. It’s too early in his career to become overly excited, but he’d be a good guy to pick up in a weak market for starting pitchers. You could always drop Ray if he begins to struggle. Hernandez has gone from Hot to Not and back to Hot over the past three weeks. Any question why Mariners management and fans, and King Felix’s fantasy owners, are frustrated? Maholm was on the Not list last week. Halladay and Greinke have been on this list almost every week. (Greinke was last week.) If either is available in your league, you have no excuse for not winning your championship.

Ray looked good in beating the White Sox Saturday. It’s too early in his career to become overly excited, but he’d be a good guy to pick up in a weak market for starting pitchers. You could always drop Ray if he begins to struggle. Hernandez has gone from Hot to Not and back to Hot over the past three weeks. Any question why Mariners management and fans, and King Felix’s fantasy owners, are frustrated? Maholm was on the Not list last week. Halladay and Greinke have been on this list almost every week. (Greinke was last week.) If either is available in your league, you have no excuse for not winning your championship.

4*- The Indians brought up LHP David Huff from Triple-A Columbus to make his major league debut as today’s starter, with LHP Jeremy Sowers demoted to Columbus. The 24-year-old Huff was 5-1 with a 4.35 ERA for the Clippers.
5*- The Royals are expected to keep Luke Hochevar in their rotation even though he struggled Tuesday in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Omaha.
6*- Angels RHP John Lackey threw just two pitches Saturday on his return from the disabled list, but that wasn’t because of a recurrence of his strained forearm. Plate umpire Bob Davidson ejected Lackey because one pitch sailed behind Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler and the second hit him in the left rib cage. Lackey told me today, “I’m probably going to start tomorrow.”
7*- Athletics RHP Sean Gallagher will start Monday’s game, when a good performance could keep him in their rotation.

5*- Journeyman LHP Jon Koronka has joined the Marlins’ rotation with RHP Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list. Koronka lost Tuesday in his first major league start since 2007.

7*- The Mets recalled RHP Tim Redding from Triple-A Buffalo to start Monday’s game. He’ll be in the rotation spot once held by LHP Oliver Perez.
8*- Following Saturday’s doubleheader, the Phillies returned to their regular rotation with RHP Chan Ho Park starting today’s game. Rookie RHP Andrew Carpenter was with Philadelphia to start just Saturday’s second game.
9*- Cardinals RHP Kyle Lohse’s start Friday lasted just two innings before rain caused the game to be postponed. He’ll be able to return to the mound Monday, with the other starting pitchers lining up behind him in the rotation.
10*- RHP Chris Carpenter (oblique injury) threw more than 100 pitches in a simulated game Friday, and is expected to be able to resume his turn in the rotation Wednesday.

8*- Following Saturday’s doubleheader, the Phillies returned to their regular rotation with RHP Chan Ho Park starting today’s game. Rookie RHP Andrew Carpenter was with Philadelphia to start just Saturday’s second game.
9*- Cardinals RHP Kyle Lohse’s start Friday lasted just two innings before rain caused the game to be postponed. He’ll be able to return to the mound Monday, with the other starting pitchers lining up behind him in the rotation.
10*- RHP Chris Carpenter (oblique injury) threw more than 100 pitches in a simulated game Friday, and is expected to be able to resume his turn in the rotation Wednesday.
11*- Following Saturday’s doubleheader, the Nationals needed a fifth starter, so they recalled LHP Ross Detwiler from Double-A Harrisburg. He was 0-3 despite a 2.96 ERA for the Senators. Since his recall, LHP Scott Olsen went on the disabled list, so Detwiler is likely to stay in the rotation.
