Pudge returning to Rangers

The Astros have traded catcher Ivan Rodriguez to Texas, the team that brought him to the major leagues. The Rangers said he would serve as Taylor Teagarden's backup while Jarrod Saltalamacchia is on the disabled list. Until Pudge is activated, Kevin Richardson, who made his major league debut Monday, would back up Teagarden.

Initial reports varied on what Houston would receive in return -- either two "mid-tier" minor leaguers or a minor leaguer and a player to be named.

This would have been an excellent deal for Texas two years ago, but then the Rangers would have had to give up more in the trade. Pudge is playing out the string -- in fact, he was last year with the Yankees. At the very least, he adds a touch of class, experience, reason, professionalism to what has become a young team. No doubt he will be well received when he first takes the field back in Arlington Wednesday or Thursday.
